The Storm
The sea shelters along the Thanet coast between Birchington-on-Sea and Ramsgate were constructed mainly at the end of the 19th and early 20th century, at the peak of British seaside tourism. They were instrumental in encouraging exploration and bringing health and well-being to visitors and the local population
Only about 50 now remain, with many in poor repair and some under threat of demolition. They stand as symbols of the changing fortunes of costal towns in England - a glorious past and an uncertain future - now shelters not from the elements, but for local people facing the storms and challenges brought about by Brexit, Covid and the war in Ukraine.
