City of Gold

City of Gold

The Health, Environment and Development (HEAD) study was established in 2005. It monitors a range of social and health indicators in five disadvantaged communities in Johannesburg: Hospital Hills, an informal settlement; Riverlea Extension 1, apartheid era low cost housing development; Braamfischerville, a democratic era low cost housing development; Bertrams, a mixed residential-commercial inner city suburb; Hillbrow, a high-rise inner city suburb).

The study has found inequities between areas, but a shared burden of chronic diseases, mental health disorders and experience of violence.
